Perry County’s courts handle a variety of legal issues for the citizens of Perry County. There are three types of courts in Perry County: General Sessions Court, Circuit Court and Chancery Court. These three courts hear different kinds of legal matters from criminal cases to civil disputes. Records, dockets, forms and filing information pertinent to General Sessions Civil and Criminal, Juvenile Civil and Criminal and Traffic court may be found in the Circuit Court Clerk’s office. Matters addressed through Chancery Civil or Criminal courts are handled by the Clerk & Master.

No weapons allowed in the courthouse, including knives, and no cell phones or cameras may be taken into the courtrooms.

General Sessions Court handles criminal, civil, traffic and juvenile courts. The General Sessions Judge and the Juvenile Probation Officer are associated with the General Sessions Courts. Civil jurisdiction is restricted to specific monetary limits and types of actions. Criminal jurisdiction is limited to preliminary hearings in felony cases and misdemeanor trials in which a defendant waives the right to a grand jury investigation and trial by jury in Circuit or Criminal CouCircuit Court handles criminal and civil cases. Circuit Courts are courts of general jurisdiction in Tennessee. Circuit court judges also hear appeals of decisions from Juvenile, Municipal, and General Sessions Courts.

The Clerk and Master is responsible for Chancery Issues such as probate of wills and administration of estates, suits for collection of delinquent property taxes after two years and certain types of civil filings including damages, torts, contracts and real estate. Probate judges also handle conservatorships and guardianships. Family law issues such as divorce, custody and child support are addressed by the Chancery Court.

GENERAL SESSIONS COURT

The General Sessions Court is a court of limited jurisdiction that hears both civil and criminal cases. The General Sessions Court hears cases concerning both adult and juveniles. The General Sessions Court will also hear your traffic violations in Traffic Court.

First appearances in criminal cases are conducted in General Sessions Court. Criminal case defendants may opt to have a preliminary hearings to rule on probable cause to determine whether their case will be bound over to the Grand Jury. Misdemeanor criminal manners may be disposed of in General Sessions Court. General Sessions criminal cases are scheduled for the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month.

General Sessions civil cases are scheduled for the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month.

Juvenile criminal cases are set for the 2nd Friday of each month. Juvenile civil cases are set for the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month.

Traffic court is conducted in the General Sessions Court, and the fines and costs are collected in the office of the Circuit Court Clerk. Traffic Court is held on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month.

CIRCUIT COURT

The Circuit Court Clerk’s office keeps the dockets, collects fines and handles record keeping for the Circuit, General Sessions, Juvenile and Traffic Courts.

Circuit Courts are courts of general jurisdiction in Tennessee. Criminal cases are tried in Circuit Court. Circuit Court judges hear civil and criminal cases and appeals of decisions from Juvenile and General Sessions Courts.

Perry County is in the 21st Judicial District which also includes Hickman County, Lewis County and Williamson County. The Circuit Court docket is set by the 21st Judicial District Circuit Court judges six months in advance, with Circuit Court being held once per month.

The Clerk & Master of the Chancery Court for Perry County, Tennessee, is responsible for legal matters that are family related or related to contracts, civil damages and the efforts of the government to collect delinquent property taxes. The Clerk and Master is a part of the Chancery Court where cases will be decided. The Clerk and Master maintains the court’s decisions.
